Photography Group May Meeting

The Group met at 10:15 a.m. on 21st May  with the theme ‘Odd Angles’.

Only 3 people attended – Brenda Bishop sent her apologies but had posted her pictures to Anjie Sargeant so that they could be reviewed.

Best picture was awarded to Ann Hawke for a distant view of the cranes’ angle in Felixstowe docks with contrasting angles of yachts in Bawdsey marina.

June’s original theme was ‘Golden Hour’ but, after some discussion, it was decided  to put that back to October when a later sunrise and an earlier sunset would be more sensible (as the proposed venue was Winchester we three were not happy taking our cameras there at about 9 p.m.!) The new June theme is ‘Street Photography’. The group will go on an outdoor shoot in Winchester on the 9th and hold the meeting on the 16th to review results. The outdoor shoot should provide bonus fodder for themes later in the year.

Photography Group April Meeting

The Group met at 10:15 a.m. on 7th April with the theme ‘Food’.

Only 3 people attended – with such a small number, a vote for best picture was very difficult so it was decided to choose two ‘best’ from each folio and include all six in the slide show on the web page.

May’s theme is ‘Odd Angles’ – this prompted a discussion about ideas that fitted the theme. These varied between using a macro to disguise the subject by emphasising a small detail, using a wide-angle lens to emphasise the foreground (e.g. a fork slightly angled to photograph the tines with a diminished handle in perspective).

General discussions centred on Anjie Sargeant’s upcoming holiday to Puglia  – this prompted a change of a future theme to ‘Classical Architecture’!

Photography Group January Meeting

The Group met at 10:15 a.m. on 20th January with the theme ‘Past Holidays’.

Only 5 people attended – with such a small number, a unanimous vote for best picture was given to Pam Liberson’s ‘Fighting Monkeys.’

The theme and date were changed to accommodate Anjie Sargeant’s date for her second hip replacement. ‘Past Holidays’ was a departure from the group’s usual practice of a theme that encouraged people to go out and take recent pictures. All the photographs submitted were of excellent quality and the stories behind why they were chosen proved both interesting and entertaining – one was taken over 40 years ago!

Because of upcoming long term treatment for Pam Liberson – effectively reducing the group to only 3 people – it was decided to postpone the February meeting until March.

Apart from lengthy discussions of health problems, Mike Liberson and John Hawke  examined the difference between bracketing exposures (for enhancing dynamic range) and focus stacking (to provide greater depth of field). The use of presets were also explained with particular reference to editing in programs such as Photoshop, Lightroom and Affinity Pro.
