Photography Group April Meeting

The Group met at 10:15 on 5th April with the theme ‘Minimalism’.
Teresa Twitchell and Lesley Wickham sent their apologies.
Member’s responses indicated that the theme was very hard. Overall best picture was John Clark’s ‘Barbed Wire’.

Barbed Wire – John Clark

John Hawke said that he had been approached by Keith Saunders, the new Anton U3A website co-ordinator, to ask for a new picture for the members’ log in page. As an interim, he had forwarded a picture of St Mary’s Church, Andover. It was generally agreed that the picture should be of the River Anton with photos being submitted for review at the May meeting. John Hawke explained that the ‘cartouche’ for logging in was at the centre of the page so members should provide pictures with interesting details at both sides, preferably with the River Anton at the centre.
Future themes were discussed resulting in candidates up to March 2024.

Photography Group March Meeting

The Group met at 10:15 on 13th March with the theme ‘Hobbies’.

We welcomed a new member – Anjie Sargeant. Lesley Wickham sent her apologies.

Overall best picture was Mike Liberson’s ‘Swan Taking Off’

Member’s responses were varied and well photographed.

Rosemary Crumplin submitted two pictures and asked how they could be improved. It was agreed that the exposure was correct but advice was given regarding the composition of both pictures. This naturally led to discussing the next theme – ‘Minimalism’. John Hawke expanded the breadth of the subject. Minimalist pictures have one subject highlighted in a neutral background. Emphasis should be placed on composing the picture using negative space e.g. a solitary tree in a landscape using the ‘rule of thirds’ to position the tree. After the meeting John Hawke e-mailed a link to a website that gave good examples of minimalist pictures.

Photography Group February Meeting

Bramble: Mike Liberson (Best Picture)

The January meeting was cancelled because most of the members were ill – a two people meeting was not considered worthwhile! The ‘Nature’ theme was put back until June.

The Group met at 10:15 on 13th February with the theme ‘Plant’.
Most members interpreted the theme as a mixture of flora and industrial hardware/facilities. Overall best picture was Mike Liberson’s ‘Bramble’.

John Hawke prompted discussion on the exposure triangle – the effects of changing aperture, speed, and ISO settings. Several examples were given with ‘best’ settings for each including wildlife photography, sports, low light scenes, and landscapes
